VIENNA, Austria – Around 8,300 civil protection sirens will sound simultaneously across Austria on Saturday, October 3, 2026, as part of the country’s annual nationwide civil protection alarm test.
The exercise will take place between 12:00 p.m. and 12:45 p.m. and is designed to test the operational readiness of Austria’s warning and alarm system while also familiarizing the public with the different emergency signals.
Following an initial siren test, authorities will activate the three official warning signals: “Warning,” “Alarm,” and “All Clear.” Information about the exercise will be broadcast through radio stations and other media channels throughout the test period.
Austria is one of the few countries with a comprehensive nationwide warning and alert network. More than 8,300 civil protection sirens are operated jointly by the Federal Ministry of the Interior, Austria’s provincial governments, and regional fire brigade associations. Depending on the nature of an emergency, alerts can be triggered centrally by the federal warning center, regionally through provincial and district warning centers, or locally by authorities on the ground.
As in previous years, the exercise will also include test messages sent through the AT-Alert mobile warning system. Notifications will be delivered to all compatible mobile phones within the coverage area. Authorities emphasized that the system operates anonymously and does not collect or process personal data such as phone numbers.
Meaning of the Siren Signals
- Siren Test: 15 seconds of a continuous steady tone.
- Warning: Three minutes of a continuous steady tone.
- Alarm: One minute of a rising and falling siren sound.
- All Clear: One minute of a continuous steady tone.
The annual drill forms part of Austria’s efforts to maintain a high level of emergency preparedness and ensure that residents can recognize and respond appropriately to warning signals in the event of a real crisis.
